Fishermen

Fishermen are special people. This profession is veiled by a halo of mysteriousness and romanticism. Many works of art are dedicated to fishermen. Many novels tell us about their life. This is a separate world, which is different form the one we live in. Fishermen have their special philosophy. They compare the flow of life with the flow of water. They compare everything with water. Why are fishermen so special and why do they have their own philosophy, while, for example, farmers have nothing of this kind? I think that the answer is very simple. Fishermen are spoilt children of fortune. They have too much time for thinking. When they put out to sea, they spend there too much time to fail to think about their life. This is the only thing they can afford, because nothing else is remained to them. Unlike fishermen, farmers are very busy, they have no time to look around, to look at the sky above and so on. They don’t have time for inventing their philosophy and think much of their life. They win their bread by means of hard work. They produce meat. Try to think what a person should do to have meat on his/her table. He/she must raise cattle, nourish it, lay in fodder, etc. to knife cattle is also a very difficult work. Another matter is fishing. You take an almost ready food from the water. The only thing you have to do is to cook it. That is why fishing is a good cover for idleness. That’s where philosophy appears. This is not a philosophy of thinkers but philosophy of idlers!
